Blackhawk Fine Arts Awards to be presented May 14

The bright lights of Hollywood and its red carpet are coming to Viroqua's Temple Theatre for the Blackhawk Fine Arts Awards, Wednesday, May 14.The event is replacing the annual Viroqua Area Schools Arts Fest, which was founded in 2003 and generally held in March. Arts Fest featured middle and high school fine arts students performing.Brad Thew, band director, said finding a date for Arts Fest was becoming more of a challenge and it was not drawing the crowds like the Performing Arts Boosters (PAB) Fine Arts Awards would on the second Wednesday in May."We had it [the fine arts awards presentation] at the Firehouse and Viking -- neither one was big enough and it's not a food event, but an awards ceremony."Thew said there was discussion about combining the two events "and make it more like the Academy Awards with formal dress."The doors open at 7 pm with art displayed in the Temple Theatre's upper lobby and servers mingling among the visitors with trays of hors d'oeuvres and punch. The program, which begins at 7:30 pm, will include 13 to 15 musical acts and forensics performances, in addition to the presentation of the annual fine arts awards to high school students."The Temple is a beautiful setting," Thew said. There is no cost to attend. Costs are being shared by the Arts Fest account (an Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Grant through the Department of Public Instruction) and PAB.
